Twenties & Turmoil

Hi.

Don’t go through turmoil alone. Click, explore, stay a while. I'll cook with you, read with you, vent with you and laugh with you. Hello, new friend.

Warm Sweet Potato Smoothie Mash

Warm Sweet Potato Smoothie Mash

Instagram makes me feel like I need to drink a green smoothie in the winter.

But I am damn freezing. So, I’m changing the rules.

I often find myself feeling pressure from that annoyingly addicting app to eat a certain way simply because everyone else is doing it. It’s like Instagram has taken human form by way of those kids your parents used to warn you about. “Don’t give in to peer pressure,” they’d say. “You’ll find yourself in trouble,” they’d caution.

Yet, here we are, as fully-grown adult children still being peer pressured into things we might not actually want to do. And the worst part is that the things we are being peer pressured into doing are seemingly “healthy.” It’s not drugs or alcohol like we were lectured about, it’s drinking green liquid in the morning and moving our bodies a certain way for a particular amount of time everyday. It’s not until you realize that you are in charge of you, and there is more than one way to do the whole health thing, that you will ever find true balance or happiness within the health sector.

Instead of doing what the cool kids are doing, I decided to be a bit of a rebel. Or a weirdo.

It was a typical Tuesday morning, like any other morning. I reached for my blender after the gym to make myself a smoothie. But the strangest thing occurred. I was shivering. Literally convulsing from the blistering chill outside. And I didn’t want a smoothie. I had a choice—I could either put the blender away and make myself a bowl of oats, or I could come up with some ridiculously delicious smoothie bowl alternative. I chose the latter.

I craved something warming, but still something sweet. I was not in the mood for oatmeal, but I did want to eat my meal out of a bowl. Don’t ask questions; everything tastes better in bowl form and with toppings. Suddenly, my warm sweet potato smoothie mash was born. And life has truly never been the same. It combines a steaming sweet potato, warming cinnamon spice, comforting peanut butter flavored protein and a big ‘ol dollop of maple sunflower butter to create the most glorious bowl of blended food my taste buds will bask in this winter. And guess what, if you don’t want to make it, don’t feel pressured to just because I like it. I’m not a bully, peer pressuring you into doing something you don’t actually want to do.

Unless you’ve got some lunch money on you, then shut up and give me your coins.

Use This:

Do this:

  1. Steam the sweet potato in the microwave.

  2. Place all ingredients in a blender and B L E N D baby. Stop & scrape, only adding liquid if you absolutely need to or if you’d like a thinner consistency.

  3. Pour into a bowl and top it with all the goods. Toppings are absolutely critical, in my humble opinion.
